What is in Oregain? Oregain is a blend of essential oils and citric acids that can be added to feed or drinking water. Essential oils are botanical extracts of herbs, spices and other plants and include extracts from oregano, eucalyptus, rosemary, savory, lemon and garlic.
What does Oregain do? Oregain enhances beneficial microflora and feed palatability. Producers in the European community have been utilizing botanicals in animal diets as growth promoters. Research has shown that growth and feed efficiency of beef cattle were improved when Oregain was included in grower rations. In swine, performance was enhanced when essential oils were added to grower and finisher rations.
How do essential oils improve intestinal health? Combining essential oils and organic acids alters the microflora of the ruminant GI tract, decreases ammonia production and increases propionate production. Numerous studies show that plant extracts have a positive effect on intestinal microflora and health of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Why does Oregain use a blend of essential oils? Using more than one source of plant extract for our essential oils improves the consistency of Oregain across different diets, feeding programs and individual animal characteristics. Research has shown that specific essential oils respond well to different types of diets. Therefore, using a blend promotes consistency as your livestock changes diets.
Why add an organic acid to Oregain? Blending essential oils with organic acids, such as citric acid, has a synergistic response on performance of animals. For example, combining essential oils and organic acids in swine feed will produce greater feed intake as compared to control diets and control plus essential oils.
Does Oregain have any effect on feed efficiency? Yes, heifers and steers fed Oregain gained more efficiently than animals in the control group. The feed efficiency of the Oregain group was 10.3% better than the control group.
Have your studies shown any downside to using Oregain? Ingredients in Oregain are generally recognized as safe (GRAS). There have been no reports of negative responses from the use of Oregain.
What age groups should receive Oregain? Oregain is safe for all age groups of animals. However, it is highly recommended in young livestock to give them an edge before they enter your herd. Developing good intestinal health at the earliest stage possible makes your feeding program even more efficient. Oregain does not have a withdrawal and there are no residuals in meat and therefore, can be used all the way to market.
How long should my animals be fed Oregain? Oregain can be fed throughout the growth cycle. It is especially beneficial in young animals. Refer to Technical Support section or Contact Us for further information.
Should I use Oregain in my calves’ milk or water supply? Oregain liquid can be used in either water or milk. Adding Oregain into calves’ daily feeding of milk is a convenient way of obtaining the benefits of Oregain.
Can I use Oregain in my milking herd? Oregain can benefit dry and lactating cows that are showing signs of stress. Oregain can be added to the feed, water or used as a drench without altering the flavor of the milk.
